My many years as a doula, have taught me that there are a few things my clients can bring to the hospital to make mom’s birthing experience much more pleasant.
A Birth Ball: These are great to use during labor. A birth ball is very versatile, mom can sit and do hip circles or figure eights or rest her head and arms on it while she’s on all fours. I can still do hip squeezes during a contraction and back and shoulder message between contractions as well. Mom can also sit on the ball in the shower while the hot water runs down her back. If your hospital doesn’t provide a birth ball, definitely bring your own you won’t regret it!
A Hot Pad: Time and time again I’ve seen these help women while they are in labor. I find them particularly helpful if mom is having back labor. The electric ones are nice if mom is in bed resting or has an epidural. Place it on her hips if they are feeling pinchy or if she’s feeling cold from the epidural. A bean bag that you heat up in the microwave is helpful when mom is moving around and not in the bed. Place it on her shoulders while she’s sits on the toilet having her contractions or put it on her tail bone if she’s having back labor.
A Salt Lamp and Oil Diffuser: Ambiance goes a long way when you are in a cold bright hospital. A salt lamp gives off the perfect pink glow while at the same time helping to purify the air. Turn off all the big overhead lights, and labor in this soft glow instead. An oil diffuser will make the nurses think they have just walked into a spa. Pick lavender, clary sage, or whatever mom’s favorite sent is, to help her relax. These two items really help a sterile hospital room feel much more homey.
